The Most Successful Print Campaigns In History…

…according to Wave

Nowadays we are not simply advert sponges but quite the opposite, needing to be sold a brand just as much as the product or service being advertised. With companies always trying to capture our attention as a business your advertising strategy must be pretty special to stand out, doing all you can to grab the eye of the modern consumer.

Print campaigns can be the making or breaking of a marketing image, either connecting a business with their target market or completely going over their heads.

Things that made us look twice, say ‘wow’ and encourage an emotive response is what we at Wave regard as a successful print campaign.

Take a look at our favourite print ads below:

Guinness 'Phones Down' campaign

Guinness – Phones Down

Print is one of the most powerful mediums used to get a message across, being a timeless advertising method that has and will always reign supreme. One company that has understood the power of a printed ad are the stout pioneers, Guinness. Putting such a great focus on the Guinness experience the company are established enough to defy marketing convention.

Their ‘Phones Down’ campaign is a favourite of ours, with its simplicity and powerful message greatly admired. They show that with the growth of modern technology we can get pretty frustrated when people are glued to their smartphones during social occasions. In Guinness’ print ad they encourage us to go back to basics and just enjoy a good old pint!

VW 'Precision Parking' campaign

Volkswagen – Precision Parking

Volkswagen showcase a collection of intelligent print campaigns, always testing our ability to not fall for a sales pitch. As a result of being such an ingrained brand they in turn possess the freedom to be minimalistic, not needing to bombard customers with salesy jargon but can select simple imagery to convey a message.

Take a look at this print ad and see what you think. We believe that it is successful in selling a feature without even displaying an image of a car. This therefore shows brand confidence, displaying Volkswagen’s sureness of their vehicles.

Harley Davidson '2 Gold Lions' campaign

Harley Davidson '2 Gold Lions' campaign

Harley Davidson – 2 Gold Lions

Harley riders are part of a brotherhood, with long beards and aggressive image juxtaposing their surprisingly soft nature. With Harely Davidson boasting such a rich historic past the brand always ensure their eternal stamp on the world of biking. One Harley campaign that the Wave team love is the ‘2 Lions’ Campaign, an ad that pressed on the subject of freedom.

On the print image it explains:

“During the Second World War, Czech riders dismantled their bikes and hid them amongst household objects so they wouldn’t be confiscated and used to continue fueling the Nazi war machine. These ‘parted out’ bikes became symbols of hope that one day freedom would prevail and they could be put back together to reclaim their rightful home—the open road.”

Successfully encapsulating the fear of the War the bike masters juxtapose the claustrophobia of conflict with the freedom of travel, really pulling on the heart strings of all that lay eyes upon the ad.

Penguin's 'Moby Dick' audio book

Penguin's 'Frankenstein' audio book

Penguin Books – Audio Release

Penguin Books have for years been criticised for not growing with the times, staying with their old-fashioned ways of the paper book.

When they branched out into audio books they did however let their personality shine through, producing images from famous tales that had been tweaked to give a humorous twist.

Although many feel that the use of technology contrasts the traditional feel of the tales it nonetheless captures our attention. We all loved to be intellectually challenged and intrigued. This is what marketing is all about!

Branding Your Business With Wave: A How-To Guide

When running a business many can place too much focus on the operational side of their company, and although an imperative feature you must ensure you create a brand that supports what it is you are doing.

At Wave we are proud of both our design and printing services, incredibly satisfied when seeing an idea lived out in ink. Believing image to be everything we only employ the best creatives to carry out branding projects, ensuring all that leaves our factory is flawless.

Equipped with a team of branding extraordinaires as well as the best software and machinery in the business, we at Wave are your one-stop shop for all branding and marketing requests.

Here is our how-to guide for branding your business; we hope it helps!

Make a strategy

When starting a business you will have many ideas flying around in your head, wanting to enthuse in all that you can achieve at once. Although delivering a faultless service is great it is extremely important that you create a brand to enhance the business, building a company that people can clearly identify with and recognise as unique.

By defining what it is you wish to achieve from your business image you can start out on the path of execution; which is the fun part!

Identify your USP

Each business offers something distinctive, something that separates them from their competitors. Whether it is a service or a company value the Unique Selling Point (USP) should be located throughout all branding material.

Before working on any ideas we suggest you make a note of your top three selling points. An idea may be to relay the areas in which you cater to, whether your business is eco-friendly and what the core service is through your branding.

Create a logo

Creating a logo is a great starting point, being the first imagery that all branding material should follow. When thinking that the basic Pepsi logo cost a whopping $1m to create it really puts into perspective the need for a simple yet effective business image.

Your logo should be:

  • Eye-catching
  • Inline with modern design
  • Transferrable (being used on websites, letterheads, stationary etc.)

The logo design process is where company colour coding usually comes into play with the personality of your brand being formed. One of our lead designers, Jodie Lane, says:

‘When creating a logo it is very important to take a step back and identify the core ethos of the business. Only when the business’ uniqueness is agreed upon can a great logo be designed’.

‘I like to sit down with clients and learn about their company, their mission and what their plans are for the future. This is what gives me the inspiration to start designing’.

Be innovative yet consistent

Standing out is all about making bold statements, doing something out of the ordinary to capture the attention of the modern consumer. Whether you choose to achieve this through modern web design or an outlandish PR campaign, we at Wave have the resources to execute your innovation in the best fashion.

Consistency plays a huge part in the success of branding, with consumers finding continuity comforting. If suddenly the Coca Cola logo used a different font I think you would agree we would all feel a little uneasy about it.
